Elizabeth George, in "Believing the Lie," examines how base emotions--greed, jealously, vengefulness, and lust, to call a few--destroy relationships and lives. The story focuses on the dysfunctional Faircloughs, whose patriarch, Bernard, married a wealthy lady and has run a successful family business for years. When a member of the clan dies in a comprehensible accident, Bernard calls in a very favor. At his behest, Assistant Commissioner Sir David Hillier dispatches Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley of latest Scotland Yard to Cumbria to discreetly check out the matter. With the assistance of his previous friends, forensic specialist Simon St. James and Simon's wife, Deborah, Tommy tries to see if somebody had the motive, means, and chance to orchestrate the victim's death.
"Believing the Lie" may be a lengthy, complex, and melodramatic tale that picks up a number of the threads left dangling within the previous installment. Tommy, a grieving widower, uncharacteristically throws himself into an imprudent love affair. Ms. George may be a skilled author who superbly integrates setting and story (readers are tempted to go to the Lake District due to her evocative descriptions of the beautiful English countryside), and she or he includes some pleasant moments of much-needed humor. though "Believing the Lie" holds our attention, it's weakened by an over-the-top plot and a surplus of angst-ridden characters who create one foolish mistake when another. Fans can welcome the come of Lynley, Simon, Deborah, and Barbara, however "Believing the Lie" has an excessive amount of sensationalism and too very little depth to rank among George's best work. (Three and a 0.5 stars.)
