A non-essential companion book to a classic

I discovered Chris Van Allsburg's The Mysteries of Harris Burdick as a young adult and fell in love. The surreal black and white illustrations and transient lines of evocative text hint at fantastic stories that are simply out of reach. a part of the fun is, of course, thinking of your own stories. however i actually assume that almost all of the attractiveness is in not knowing the total story -- however having the ability to imagine that it's splendid.
Telling stories that live up to imaginary ones could be a daunting task, and maybe inevitably, The Chronicles of Harris Burdick falls short. it isn't for need of talent: the line-up of fourteen all-star authors includes Gregory Maguire, Kate DiCamillo, Lois Lowry, Stephen King, Louis Sachar, and Jon Scieszka. Lemony Snicket, still in his Series of Unfortunate Events persona, introduces the project and therefore the stories. however just by adding concrete details, beginnings, and ends, the authors lose a number of that sense of marvel therefore evident in Mysteries.
The fourteen stories are perfectly readable, if a trifle uneven. My favorites embody Jon Scieszka's below the Rug, that reads like his fractured fairy tale image books: terse, a trifle macabre, and quite funny. I conjointly enjoyed Jules Feiffer's Uninvited Guests, with its deranged main character and existential twist, though i can not imagine that younger readers would get a lot of out of this one. Some of the stories are alittle peculiar. Sherman Alexie could be a vastly proficient author who spins a memorable tale during a Strange Day in July, however it does not match the sunny innocence of the illustration it accompanies. Lois Lowry's The Seven Chairs struck me as having an odd sexual undertone, and Steven King's The House on Maple Street, with that the gathering ends, is really distasteful. the opposite stories vary from mildly entertaining to disappointingly mundane. some feel a trifle forced.
The stories are everywhere the place in terms of tone and setting -- creepy, sweet, snide, heart-warming, grotesque -- and that i do not assume they are all acceptable for young readers. The Chronicles of Harris Burdick is a remarkable assortment of stories, however it's basically a companion book to a far additional powerful and lasting work.
